CCBM Leads Hands-on Laboratory Activities for the AAUW Mother and Daughter Science Camp

January 19, 2019

On Saturday, January 19, 2019, CCBM Executive Director Carrie Kouadio, CREST Intern Asmaa Mohamed and Mercy Medical Center Pharmacist Dr. Lisa Tarbell led presentations and hands-on laboratory activities for the AAUW Mother and Daughter Science Camp held at UC Merced. Around 25 fourth and fifth grade girls and their mothers (or other significant women) learned about chemistry in 2 two-hour sessions. The camp is organized and managed through a collaboration of the Merced chapter of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) and the Merced County Office of Education.

Special thanks to contributors:

  • Dr. Petia Gueorguieva, STEM Resource Center Coordinator, for her valuable contributions to the lesson planning and event materials
  • Gehad Elhanafy, CCBM Science and Technology Enrichment Program (STEP) participant (Bin Liu lab, 2018), for her assistance in the event execution
  • Dr. Donna Jaramillo-Fellin, Instructional Laboratory Coordinator in the School of Natural Sciences, for her ongoing generosity and involvement
  • Rosanna Ayers, Science/STEM Coordinator at the Merced County Office of Education, for her leadership of this important outreach program in Merced
  • Other volunteers and staff that made the event a success!
