The Art of Conversation: How and Why to Speak to Strangers (and Network Effectively) / Oct. 13

Do you find it hard to talk to people you’ve just met? Do you ever feel intimidated by the idea of “networking”? Are you ever worried that you don’t “have what it takes” to be an effective networker? This workshop is designed to help alleviate these concerns by offering concrete strategies for how to meet new people, engage in conversations, and build your confidence in “networking.” Participants will leave with practical tips for beginning and maintaining conversations and networking relationships, while learning how to manage the anxiety involved in the process. Whether an introvert, extrovert, or ambivert, you can be an effective networker—this workshop will teach you how! Duration of session: 75 min. Targeted towards graduate students and postdocs - open to all.

Managing Up: Negotiating the Relationship with Your Supervisor / Oct. 14
Friday, Oct. 14, 9:00-10:15 am, Conference Center - Room 105
The relationship you build with your supervisor (PI) is important for your future career development, and you stand to gain from shaping a mutually beneficial bond. Part of a successful working relationship is an understanding of the mutual goals and responsibilities both sides share. The workshop will seek to normalize conflict as a critical part of the mentoring relationship and will address the skills needed to cultivate a “managing up” mindset. Duration of session: 75 min. Targeted towards graduate students and postdocs - open to all.

One of the most critical aspects to mentor-mentee relationships is a shared understanding of what each person expects. Participants will gain the knowledge & skills to effectively establish, communicate, & align mutually beneficial expectations.

 
About the Speaker:
Daniel Wong currently serves as the Assistant Dean for Academic and Postdoctoral Services in the Graduate Division at the University of California, Los Angeles. He and his staff administer programs and processes that encourage the academic progress and professional development of graduate students, visiting graduate researchers, and postdoctoral scholars. He has extensive experience in public speaking, workshop facilitation, teaching, and research in both the STEM and Humanities fields. He received his bachelor's degrees in Biochemistry and English from the University of Kansas and his Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
